It’s Gillian Flynn’s Genre and We’re All Just Reading It

My brain goes very easily into the darkness. It always has. There are people who like to see what’s under the rock and people who don’t, and for some reason I’ve always been one of those to say, “Hey, let’s flip over that rock.” –Gillian Flynn

Gillian Flynn is arguably one of the best in the thriller business, and definitely an inspiration when it comes to my writing. Let’s break down her three novels.

Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects is the first novel I read of hers and probably the one that sticks out in my mind the most, since I recently watched the show. There was such an ominous/creepy feeling throughout this whole novel; the setting, familial relationships, the characters, so dark and eerie in the best way.

Dark Places

This book probably has the most dark and twisted ending out of all her books. I started to suspect certain twists and turns but once everything started piling up at the end I was definitely taken by surprise. When it’s finally revealed how everything went down, it just makes you think, how is Flynn able to come up with something that is crazy, yet so believable?

Gone Girl

I’m basic for this but Gone Girl is probably my favorite of Flynn’s novels. Even though I already knew the plot going into the book, it was still so immersive and addictive, I couldn’t put it down! Each of her novels is really focused on familial and romantic relationships, which really puts her characters at the center of her novels which I love.

I read all three of Flynn’s novel this year, I only wish there were more I could pick up! Have you guys read any of her books? If yes, which one is your favorite?
